no artificial colours

Natalie Holloway-Reed and Ren Gregorčič, 2008. Stadium seating. 3 x 3 m.

Commissioned by Lend Lease for the Victoria Harbour Young Artist Initiative, as part of Contempora2 Sculpture Award held at Victoria Harbour, Docklands, Melbourne near the corner of Bourke & Merchant St from 2-20 April 2008. Documentation by Natalie Holloway-Reed.

'No Artificial Colours was a collaborative installation by Natalie Holloway-Reed and Ren Gregorcic located on Harbour in Docklands, Melbourne. The sculptural intervention was comprised of a section of stadium seating, 3 by 3 metres in size. The artwork inverted the direction of the seating of the nearby Docklands Stadium to look out towards the Bolte Bridge, rather than within the stadium interior.

Stadium seating is designed to focus a collective attention on a central spectacle. In 'No Artificial Colours,' this conventional arrangement was subverted, focusing the gaze outward, challenging the passive role of spectatorship. The title, 'No Artificial Colours,' further emphasises the authenticity of the experience being offered, chosen to suggest a return to unmediated observation, free from artificial stimuli.
